SQE Assessment Results and Performance Standards

Pass Rates in 2025

Understanding the statistical data can help you prepare more effectively and develop a realistic SQE exam strategy.

Current Pass Rate Analysis:

  • SQE1: Approximately 55% pass rate across all attempts
  • SQE2: Generally higher pass rates (around 75%) for those who’ve made it through SQE1
  • Combined journey: Many successful solicitors don’t pass first time

Statistical Context

These statistics include everyone from complete beginners to seasoned paralegals, from those who studied intensively for months to those who perhaps underestimated the preparation needed. Your individual approach and preparation quality matter far more than overall averages.

Re-sit Considerations:

About 30-40% of candidates use their second attempt, and many of them achieve success. Re-sitting represents an opportunity for improvement and learning rather than failure.

Recent Assessment Results (SQE1)

  • January 2025 SQE1: 56% pass rate
  • July 2024 SQE1: 44% pass rate
  • January 2024 SQE1: 56% pass rate

Recent Assessment Results (SQE2)

  • January 2025: SQE2: 75% pass rate
  • October 2024 SQE2: 81% pass rate
  • July 2024 SQE1: 74% pass rate

Personal Success Strategy

Your objective is to demonstrate competence as a day-one solicitor rather than to exceed statistical averages. Focus on your preparation quality and systematic approach rather than comparative performance. Every person who has passed started from the same position.

If Things Don’t Go to Plan

If you fail SQE1 or SQE2, you will have to pay the relevant fee for the exam again. The latest fee information is available on the SRA website.

You can appeal if you fail SQE1 or SQE2. There is a process for appealing against the decision of the Assessment Board. You must make the appeal based on one of the authorised grounds listed on the SRA website. This must be done using the Appeals Form which is available in your candidate account. The full appeals policy is available on the SRA website.
