Revise SQE
Published: 27th October 2026 | Reviewed annually
This article is based on a video created by Dr Yannis (ioannis) Glinavos, DrYannis.co.uk: Which SQE Books Do You Actually Need?, recorded in October 2026, and reproduced here with his permission.
If you're on an SQE preparation course, start with the materials your provider includes and buy only what fills a gap. If you're self-studying as a law graduate, a concise revision-guide series aligned with the SRA assessment specification, such as Revise SQE, may provide a suitable foundation for revision, alongside sufficient practice questions. If you're new to English law, begin with a comprehensive textbook series, such as the University of Law manuals or Routledge's Essential Law for SQE1, and add revision guides closer to the exam. Whichever you choose, check the edition matches the examinable law cut-off date for your sitting.
Preparing for SQE1 can be expensive, and choosing the right study materials isn't always straightforward. With textbooks, revision guides, question banks and preparation courses available from numerous providers, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the options. The right choice depends on your existing legal knowledge, how you're preparing for the exam, the resources you already have and your budget. Whether you're studying independently, following an SQE preparation course or looking for additional revision support, this guide will help you decide what you actually need.

1. Do you need to buy SQE1 books?
Before purchasing anything, consider what study materials you already have access to.
If you're enrolled on an SQE preparation course, your provider may supply textbooks, revision notes, practice questions and mock assessments. It's worth exploring these resources before spending money on additional books.
If you're self-studying, you'll need to consider how you're going to learn and revise the subjects covered by the SQE1 assessment specification.
Your previous legal education and experience will also influence what you need. For example:
- Law graduates may already understand many of the underlying legal principles and primarily need resources to refresh their knowledge and prepare for the SQE1 assessments.
- Non-law graduates and career changers may benefit from more detailed explanations of unfamiliar legal concepts before moving on to revision.
- Candidates taking an SQE preparation course may find that concise revision guides complement their existing course materials.
- Candidates resitting SQE1 may prefer to concentrate on particular subjects or skills rather than purchasing another complete set of textbooks.
The key is to identify where you need support before deciding what to buy.
2. Textbooks or revision guides: what's the difference?
Not all SQE1 books are designed to do the same job.
Comprehensive textbooks
Textbooks generally provide detailed explanations of legal principles, supported by background information and examples. They can be particularly useful if you're learning a subject for the first time or need a deeper understanding of how the law operates. However, comprehensive textbooks can be lengthy and expensive, and may contain more detail than you need for focused exam revision.
Revision guides
Revision guides are designed to help you review, consolidate and test your existing knowledge. They typically present information in a more concise, structured format, making it easier to identify and revisit key legal principles.
For example, the Revise SQE series is structured around the SRA assessment specification, with subject-specific revision guides containing practice multiple-choice questions and answers. Revision guides can be particularly helpful in the later stages of preparation, although they can also support learning throughout your studies.
Which should you choose?
If you're unfamiliar with a subject, a comprehensive textbook or other detailed learning resource may be the better starting point. If you already understand the fundamentals and want to consolidate your knowledge, a revision guide may be more appropriate. You may find that a combination of resources works best, but that doesn't necessarily mean buying multiple complete book series.
3. What SQE1 study materials are available?
There are several established publishers and providers offering SQE1 study resources. The options differ considerably in their scope, format and cost.
University of Law
The University of Law publishes a comprehensive series of SQE1 study manuals covering the relevant areas of law and legal practice. These are designed to provide detailed explanations and may appeal to candidates who want substantial textbook coverage, particularly those learning unfamiliar subjects.
Revise SQE
Revise SQE publishes a series of concise, subject-specific revision guides aligned with the SRA assessment specification. The series includes revision guides for FLK1 and FLK2, together with dedicated practice assessment books containing multiple-choice questions.
Students can purchase individual subjects, FLK1 or FLK2 bundles, or the complete SQE1 collection. The books are available in print, ebook and audiobook formats, giving students flexibility in how they study and revise. This flexibility can be particularly useful if you already have learning materials and only need additional revision support in particular areas.
Revision Killer
Revision Killer offers condensed SQE1 revision materials, including multiple-choice questions. Its approach focuses on compressing the examinable material into a smaller number of volumes. This may appeal to candidates looking for highly condensed notes, particularly for final revision.
Oxford University Press
Oxford University Press offers SQE Prep & Practise, a fully online study package combining digital textbooks, practice questions and mock assessments. Unlike traditional printed textbook collections, the materials are accessed through an online learning platform. Candidates can purchase the complete SQE1 package or separate FLK1 and FLK2 resources. This may appeal to students who prefer studying digitally and want their learning materials and question practice in one place.
Routledge
Routledge publishes the Essential Law for SQE1 series, offering individual textbooks covering subjects within the SQE1 assessment specification. These provide a more traditional textbook approach and may appeal to candidates seeking detailed coverage of particular subjects.
SQE preparation course providers
Providers such as BPP, BARBRI and QLTS School include study materials as part of their wider SQE preparation programmes. These packages can offer teaching, structured study plans, question banks and other support alongside written materials.
However, purchasing a complete preparation course is a different decision from buying individual textbooks or revision guides. If you're already enrolled on a course, make sure you're taking full advantage of the resources included before buying additional materials.
4. How important is it to buy up-to-date SQE1 books?
One important factor when choosing SQE1 study materials is how up to date they are. The law changes, and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) may also amend the SQE assessment specification. This means that older textbooks and revision guides may not reflect the law applicable to your examination.
SQE1 candidates are assessed on the law as it stands four calendar months before the first assessment in the relevant examination window. For example:
- January 2027 SQE1: the examinable law cut-off date is 11 September 2026.
- July 2027 SQE1: the examinable law cut-off date is 12 March 2027.
When choosing study materials, it's worth checking:
- Which edition you're purchasing and when it was published.
- Whether the content reflects the relevant SRA assessment specification.
- Whether the publisher provides supplementary updates.
- Whether the materials are appropriate for your intended examination sitting.
How Revise SQE keeps its books up to date
Revise SQE publishes new editions of all its SQE1 books annually, incorporating relevant changes to the law and the SRA assessment specification. The law is generally stated as at 1 May for each new edition. Where relevant changes occur between that date and the applicable SQE1 examinable law cut-off date, supplementary updates may be made available online. Students can check for any supplementary updates on our Legal Updates page.
Whichever publisher you choose, make sure you understand the date to which the materials are current and check for any available updates before sitting your examination.
5. Do you need SQE1 practice questions as well as books?
SQE1 is assessed through single best answer multiple-choice questions, so understanding the law is only part of your preparation. You also need to practise applying legal principles to realistic scenarios and selecting the best answer from the available options.
Practice questions can help you:
- Identify gaps in your knowledge.
- Become familiar with the assessment format.
- Develop your ability to apply legal principles.
- Improve your question-answering technique.
- Build confidence ahead of the assessments.
Different publishers and preparation providers offer different types and quantities of questions, so it's worth checking what's included before purchasing. If you already have access to a question bank through your course, consider whether you need additional questions or whether your priority should be revising the subjects you find most challenging.
6. How much should you spend on SQE1 books?
There is a considerable difference between the cost of individual revision guides, comprehensive textbook collections and complete preparation courses. However, spending more doesn't necessarily mean you're buying the most appropriate materials for your needs. A sensible approach is to:
- Identify the resources you already have.
- Decide whether you need detailed teaching materials, concise revision support or additional question practice.
- Identify any subjects where your knowledge needs strengthening.
- Compare the content, formats and costs of the resources available.
- Purchase additional materials selectively.
For example, if you're confident in most FLK1 subjects but struggling with one particular area, purchasing a single subject guide may be more useful than investing in another complete collection. Equally, if you're learning English law from scratch, you may decide that a more comprehensive set of textbooks is a worthwhile investment. The aim should be to build a collection of resources that supports your preparation without unnecessary duplication.
7. Final thoughts: choosing the right SQE1 books
There's no single set of SQE1 books that's right for every candidate. The best choice depends on your starting point, the resources you already have and how you prefer to study. Comprehensive textbooks can provide valuable explanations when you're learning unfamiliar material. Revision guides can help consolidate knowledge, while practice questions allow you to test your understanding and develop exam technique.
Before spending money, think about what you actually need your next book or resource to help you achieve. Choosing carefully can make your SQE1 preparation more focused, manageable and affordable.

8. Watch: Which SQE Books Do You Actually Need?
Dr Yannis, an independent legal academic and educator, has produced a useful video comparing SQE1 study materials from a range of publishers and preparation providers. He looks at the different types of resources available, their costs and feedback from SQE candidates, including discussions on Reddit. His central recommendation is simple: start with one main study resource and supplement it where you identify gaps in your knowledge. It's a useful perspective if you're trying to decide which SQE1 books are worth buying.

Do I need to buy SQE1 books if I'm on a preparation course?
Often not at first. Course providers usually include textbooks, revision notes, practice questions and mocks, so explore what's already included before buying anything. Many course students later add concise revision guides for the subjects they find hardest.
What's the difference between a textbook and a revision guide?
A textbook teaches a subject in depth, with background and examples, and suits candidates learning unfamiliar material. A revision guide is shorter and structured for consolidating and testing knowledge you already have, which makes it most useful in the later stages of preparation.
Can I use older editions of SQE1 books?
Be careful. SQE1 assesses the law as it stands four calendar months before the first assessment in your window: 11 September 2026 for the January 2027 sitting, and 12 March 2027 for July 2027. Check the edition date, whether it reflects the current SRA assessment specification, and whether the publisher provides supplementary updates.
Do I need practice questions as well as books?
Yes. SQE1 is assessed entirely through single best answer multiple-choice questions, so applying the law under exam conditions is a skill in itself. Use a question bank alongside whatever you use to learn and revise the material.
How much should I spend on SQE1 materials?
It varies widely between single revision guides, full textbook collections and complete courses. Start from what you already have, buy selectively for the gaps, and avoid duplicating complete series. A single subject guide for a weak area is often better value than another full collection.
